Summer Life at the Cottage
Growing up on the West Coast, many of my friends would talk about summers at their cabins (or cottages, if you're from eastern Canada) and all of the great times they would share with their friends and family. While I had plenty of memorable experiences during the summers of my youth, my family were not cabin people. I never knew the joy and relaxation that comes from a hot summer afternoon soaking up sunshine, jumping into the cool water of the lake, and lazing around with card games and a crisp sugary soda.
Marrying my partner Patrick allowed me to join a family that are definitely keen cottage devotees. Their family cottage is on the shores of a tiny lake in the middle of Nova Scotia and it is picture perfect for me to fulfil my Canadian cottage dreams. Much to my delight, the humble abode is full of classic cottage bric-a-brac: threadbare beach towels in varying retro patterns, a dusty collection of citronella candles, a mismatched assortment of novelty mugs and drinking glasses, creaky 1970s plaid sofas, and of course plenty of memories.
Watching the sun go down across the lake, it's hard not to feel a sense of calm and peace within. The only sounds are the crickets, a lone call of a loon, and the crackling of a fire. In other words, perfection.
